Brush sizes are designated as: THICKNESS x WIDTH x LENGTH of the carbon. If the brush design includes a Red Top, the length measurement should include the pad. On brushes with bevels, the length is measured on the long side.
Brushes are frequently supplied with top and/or bottom bevels in order to provide a more stable reaction of a brush within the holder. Production tolerance on a bevel is plus or minus one degree(+/- 1.0 degree).
The pictures below are only a small number of possible shunt styles and locations. Please pick the style that best represents your shunt style and location.
Shunt locations are given numerical designation according to the position at which the wire protrudes from the carbon.
Rectangular or Square Brushes (no bevel) With no bevel(not illustrated)the wide face or width of the brush is to be held toward the observer.
Beveled Brushes (Figure 1) The short face is to be held toward the observer.
Slip Ring Brushes (Figure 2) The narrow face is to be held toward the observer. The number is to begin at the left hand side of top face nearest the observer.
The length of the shunt is measured from the top of the carbon or tip of the pad on Red Top brushes to the center of the terminal or cap where connection is to be made.
There is and ever increasing variety of cats and terminsal used on brushes. Some of the most common are shown below. In order to determine terminals and caps not shown here; it is recommended that a detailed drawing or sample be submitted to assure correct fit.
Coil Brush Spring Brushes (ONLY)
Brush designs with a coil spring held captive with the carbon, require additional information in order to assure proper reproduction. The coil spring and the holder must be specified as follows
Frequently special markings can be found on carbon brushes. Please record everything that appears on your brush!We are especially interested in grade markings. If you have a Helwig brush the markings will enable us to identify the proper brush quickly and accurately. If we are supplying you with a replacement brush, we will put our vast cross reference resources to work to ensure the proper brush is delivered to you.Please record everything.
