High Speed Turbines
Carbon brushes used on high speed turbine ring applications are the most critical applications in the world. Helwig Carbon has been supplying carbon brushes for these applications for over 80 years. Our H702 and H704 low friction graphite grades have been used extensively on Allis Chalmers, ABB, GE, and Westinghouse units around the world.
For your convenience, over 20 experienced field service representatives are available for on-site inspections and troubleshooting.
Over 20 popular brush styles are carried in stock ready for same day shipment. Custom made brushes are available in a day or two when necessary.
Due to the extremely high peripheral speeds it is difficult to maintain good contact with the ring.
Trouble Shooting Tips
· Rings should be round within .001” with less than 6 mils vibration.
· Spring pressure should be checked periodically to insure it is the recommended 2.5 psi for 3600 RPM turbines.
· Free movement of the brushes up and down in the brush holder should also be checked.
This application is susceptible to selective action and an imbalance in current flow. This can lead to a build up of deposits on the inside of the brushholders which can impede the movement of the brush. In extreme cases the brush will be held up in the holder and lose contact with the ring. Regular maintenance checks can help identify and prevent these problems before they become serious.
