How to Check Your Carbon Motor Brushes

Helwig Carbon Team

The carbon motor brushes are one of the parts of the motor that will get worn down more often than other parts, so it is very important that you know how to check them and make sure that you change them before they actually go out. Here are some important tips for checking carbon motor brushes.

About every 50 hours the machine is in use, you should do a sight check of the carbon motor brushes.

1. Make sure that you remove the screws holding the brushes in place.

2. Then just dump the brushes out by turning over the motor.

3. When you examine the carbon motor brushes, you should see that they are curved in the shape of the commutator. If they aren’t, then they are worn down.

In some cases, you might prefer to use a continuity tester to check the carbon motor brushes rather than just sight checking them.

1. To use a continuity tester, first take off the lead wires that connect the motor to the circuit. Before you take them off, make sure that you mark them so that you know where they go back.

2. After the wires have been removed, attach the tester clip to one of the leads.

3. You’ll then need to touch the probe to the other motor lead.

4. Rotate the motor by hand to see if the motor carbon brushes are still good.

5. The tester is working when it starts to light up. If the tester does anything but light up, then it’s time to change the motor carbon brushes, even if you are getting a result that seems to be intermittent.

Carbon motor brushes are often the source of a problem with a motor, but there are also numerous other things that could be causing issues. If you’re having problems with a motor, the carbon motor brushes are a good place to start, but you can prevent a lot of issues by simply checking them regularly and performing regular maintenance on the motor in this way.
